Part One: Zack
When the sexy sheriff’s fingers touched mine, two things happened simultaneously. The first thing that happened was that I felt something; a shock, like someone had rubbed their feet across a carpeted floor and built up a charge. But it was more than just static electricity; it was power, and sex, and something familiar I couldn’t identify. It shot through my entire body, from my fingers through my balls and down to my feet.
The second and certainly much more concerning thing that happened was that the sheriff began to change, and I don’t mean he had a change of heart. I mean his physical body began to change. He cried out, and jerked his hand away from mine. He was looking down at me, still sitting on my bed. His eyes looked wild, and he held his hand like it was burned.
It was about that time that the dude began to growl.
Something was happening to the hand that had touched mine. The fingers were contorted, making a claw. Underneath the skin, the muscle and bone seemed to be stretching, growing longer. It was impossible, inhuman, and happening before my eyes.
He was looking at me like with a strange mixture of fear and violence, and maybe something close to lust. Then he spoke. The smooth baritone was gone, his voice replaced with something rougher and more raw. “What are you?”
I couldn’t understand what he was asking. “What am I?” I replied, “Have you seen your fucking hand?”
He looked down, and seemed to notice his hand for the first time. The fingers were longer, and each tipped with a sharp finger nail. And covering it all was a coating of dark hair. It was the hair that finally did it for me. The other shoe dropped. Normal people didn’t have their hands turn into claws. He was the monster I saw last night. I was trapped in my dorm room with a fucking werewolf.
In an instant, he was on top of me. The big guy had at least a hundred pounds on me, and all that mass slammed me back onto my bed. His face was just inches from mine. It took me a second to register the fact that the guy had just pounced on me. He got in my face, and took a deep sniff of me. Then his tongue came out of his mouth. It was longer than any human tongue I’d ever seen. Irrationally, I thought of how useful it could be to have a tongue that long. Then he was licking me, up one side of my face and down the other. Was he tasting me? Was I about to be eaten in my own dorm room?
I felt something hard pressing into my leg. I could’t help it. I looked down to see an obscene lump in the sheriff’s pants. He then ground this sizable bulge into my leg. His body radiated heat, and I began to wonder if he going to eat me or fuck me. What the hell was happening? I felt a spike of terror in my chest, but couldn’t deny that I’d had the hots for him since he showed up at my door. Still, terror was winning over horniness. “Please, I whispered, “Don’t.”
He looked into my eyes for a moment, with a look of genuine confusion. The he leapt up from the bed and backed away.
The sheriff quickly hid his deformed hand behind his back, as if somehow I could forget what had just happened. He was breathing heavily, taking deep breaths and backing away from me. I’ll be damned if he didn’t look genuinely afraid.
“I’m so sorry, Zack.”
I started to stand up, but he growled at me. Actually, full-on growled. “Stay where you are!” he shouted.
He backed up until he touched the wood of my door. He was breathing slower now, but had a sheen of sweat on his face.
I had to ask. “What are you?” He just shook his head. But I wanted, needed some sort of explanation. “Were you what I saw in the woods last night? Was that real?”
He just shook his head. “I have to go. I almost…I could have…”
He started to turn towards the door, but I felt a momentary impulse to stop him. On the one hand, this man, or thing, or whatever he was, terrified me and I wanted him as far away from me as possible. On the other, the last twenty four hours had completely flipped my world upside down, leaving me with hundreds of questions.
“Wait! I need answers!”
“We both do. But I can’t stay. I’m sorry.”
Then he was gone. Part of me wanted to rush to the door and follow. I mean, how fucking crazy to you have to be to want to chase after a cop that can change into a seven foot tall monster. So I stayed sitting on my bed, partially out of fear, and partially out of shock. I ran the events back in my mind. The strange, strong sensations I felt when we touched were unlike anything I had ever experienced. The best word I could find to describe it was power. And it touched some part of myself that just minutes ago I didn’t even know existed.
And his arm! Watching that arm contort and change was like something from a movie, a real life special effect.
Finally I got up and went to door, locking it. I took a look through the peep hole to make sure he wasn’t hanging out in the hallway, Then I went to my fridge to get a bottle of cold water. I walked around the place, pacing and thinking. I started trying to put my thoughts in order.
Werewolves are real. I wasn’t tripping, I saw one last night. Then today, it tracked me to my dorm. So I’m two for two on my per-day werewolf ratio, unless it was after midnight when I saw the one last night, and that’s assuming its not the same werewolf, in which case I’m actually just one for one, and I’m digressing as I have a mental breakdown.
Oh yes, It’s also a cop and it knows where I live.
Fuck. What do I do now?

Part Two: Connor
Control…control…control…
This was Connor Sinclair’s mantra as he drove away from Zack’s dorm. At that moment, he felt anything but in control. He hated it. Control was the cornerstone around which he had built his life. When you share your existence with a primal force of nature, you learn control early and practice it often. The darkest, most tragic days of his youth had taught him this lesson. Connor had learned it well and at great personal cost.
His mind was in turmoil. He had almost shifted in front of that boy! A loss of control like that, was not acceptable to him. To have the discipline that he had instilled into himself, into his his sons, into every aspect of his life, shattered by this seemingly random human made no sense at all. Pack law was clear, humans could not see a wolf and live. Yet, his wolf had other ideas.
Going to the boys dorm to question him had seemed like the logical next step. Eddie had been able to get his address from the computer at the hospital. After his son and called to say the boy was headed to his dorm, Connor went to talk to him.
The moment he stepped into the boy’s room he realized he had made a mistake. Zack’s scent was much stronger in his dorm than it had been at the hospital. His scent was so exotic, yet also familiar. Connor could feel his wolf tense up the moment he entered the room. When he touched the boy, he started to shift. His wolf leaped forward, throwing off his control in way that hadn’t happened since he was a teenager. Only his years of experience and sheer will power kept him from a full transformation. Connor didn’t want to think about what would have happened then.
The question that the sheriff kept returning to was: why? What was it about this particular boy that effected both his wolf and his son’s so powerfully? Part of the reason was surely the full moon. Wolves are always stronger during the nights of the fullest moon. But that couldn’t be the only reason. Back there, when he was struggling with his wolf, he felt an overwhelming feeling of possessiveness. His wolf wanted the boy. Conner could understand that. The young man was attractive. That auburn hair, that pattern of freckles across his nose… It pulled the thread of a memory that he couldn’t quite place. And despite some physical differences, something about Zack reminded Connor of his own sons. But none of that explained why his wolf had overcome his control.
Connor had to find answers. Instead of getting on the highway to head home, he turned on a side street and headed to the sheriff’s station. As he walked into the building he was greeted by his coworkers. He smiled a smile he didn’t feel, waved, and gave the staff a cheerful good afternoon. One of his deputies, a lanky bean pole named Stern, called out as he walked to his office. “Why are you here on you weekend off, bossman?”
Connor smiled. You know me, dedication runs in my blood.” Stern laughed and nodded. Connor slipped into his office and shut the door. He quickly booted up his computer and got to work. Soon he was running Zack Wilson through every law enforcement database at his disposal.
No criminal record…lives out of state…family address…birth record…hmm, now that’s something…adopted…
Connor went deep into Zack’s past. It wasn’t long before he unearthed a news story about the car accident that made Zack an orphan. Jane Doe driver, deceased. John Doe, infant survivor. He felt a twinge of familiarity when he saw the mangled car in the news story, just a tiny flash of insight that said he was on to something. He quickly sent a records request to the county where the accident took place, and was surprised that they quickly responded with the accident report. Good to know someone else was working on a Sunday.
He opened the report, quickly skimming the document. He arrived at the crash site photos and for a moment, his heart leaped into his throat. With a sickening realization, he understood why the car had been familiar. Despite her injuries, Connor recognized the body of the Jane Doe. He noted the date of the crash, then did some quick math in his head.
It all fell into place: an almost impossible string of coincidences, secrets, and lies. There was still much he didn’t understand, but Connor now knew the reason why his wolf reacted so strongly to Zack. He knew why the boy smelled strangely familiar to both himself and Eddie. He wagered that his son Billy would react the same way.
It was blood calling to blood.
Part Three: The Sinclairs
It was just after dark when Connor Sinclair returned to his home. He was deep in thought. Any other night of the month he would have gone to his home office with what he had learned to sit and think. But the moon would be rising soon, and his wolf would need to run.
“Boys, I’m home!”
Eddie appeared first, eager for news. “Hey Dad. What happened?”
Connor shook his head. “Your brother here?”
“Yeah, he’s in his room. Want me to get him?
Connor nodded. “Yeah, I think we all need to talk.”
A few minutes later Connor and his two sons were sitting at the dining room table. They would not be sharing a meal here tonight, as transforming on a full stomach can be unpleasant. All of them shared the sense of anticipation that comes from a full moon. His sons looked to Connor as he sat for a moment in his thoughts. Eddie was itching to know what happened. “Did you talk to him? What did he say?”
Billy grew more concerned as the seconds slipped away and his dad stayed silent. He could sense something was off. “What’s wrong, Dad?”
Connor sighed. “Eddie, did your brother tell you what happened last night, with this young man, Zack?”
Billy nodded. “He told me.”
“Ok, good.” Connor paused again. He was having difficulty finding the words to even begin. Coincidences. Secrets. Lies. “I went to Zack’s dorm room. I talked with him, but something happened. I almost lost control of my wolf and he saw it. I left.”
Both of his son’s looked at him with shocked expressions. The couldn’t imagine their father could lose control and shift like that.
“How is that possible, Dad?” Billy asked.
Eddie shook his head. “You don’t know, B. Its the way he smells…”
For a moment, Connor looked at his two sons. How much could he tell them? How much should he tell them? His boys were his pride and joy. He loved them beyond any measure. They shared things that went far beyond what human society could ever understand. They weren’t just family, they were all the family he had. They were also his pack. His little pack of three wolves.
“Ok boys. After I left the university, I went to the office. Spent the afternoon digging. I found a lead that might explain some things. This boy, Zack, was an orphan. He survived a car accident that killed his biological mother. They had no ID at the crash, the car was unregistered, so they were both unidentified.”
Billy shook his head. “What does that have to do with anything?”
“I saw the pictures from the scene of the accident. I recognized Zack’s mother.”
“You knew his mother?”
Connor took a breath. No turning back now. “Yes, I did, son. She was your mother too.”
